Turbo 3.4 Build-up

Return to Home Page

Here, you will see some of the progress as we build a 3.4 liter engine from a '94 Camaro which will be transplanted into our '91 Camaro test car.  This engine will have custom internals to hold the boost pressure from a turbo charger system.  All of the piping including headers, all exhaust leading to the underside of the car, and intake piping will be fabricated in house.

Here are a few pictures of the turbo's mounting location.  That was the first thing that we wanted to determine after getting the turbo.  Sorry about the blur on the last one, camera lens fogged up a little and I didn't realize it at the time.

Here are a few parts as they were collected...  On the left is the Applied Technologies wastegate.  On the right is a shot of the heads (aluminum heads from a FWD vehicle) and you can see the wastegate and turbo in the background.

On the left is the 3.4 engine that will be used as it was being dissassembled.  On the right is the wastegate after it was cleaned up and the flanges were cut and bolted onto it.

First picture is the passenger's side header bolted in place and being fabricated.  Middle is the Driver's side header partially done.  And, last shows the heads, headers, y-pipe, and turbo mounted on the 3.4 which is on the engine stand.

*Update - 6/17/06*

This project went on hold for a little while as we had problems with our current, naturally aspirated engine and decided to go ahead rebuild that engine. Anyway, the car is up and running again now so work has began again on the turbo project.  Here is a nice set of custom made pistons from JE Pistons that just arrived Friday...they will compliment the hybrid 3.4 engine quite nicely!
